IN the Northeast you’ll discover the country’s humble beginnings in New England, which boasts a distinctive accent, flair, and culture all of its own. From its rocky, lighthouse-dotted coastline filled with fisherman and ferries, the magnificent foliage covering its wild landscape every autumn, and the deep—and sometimes dark—history that haunts this region, you won’t be at a shortage for sites or scenery to enjoy or explore.
Boston, Massachusetts, the largest metropolitan area in the region, pre-dates the American Revolution, and its Freedom Trail passes sites critical to the nation’s founding. As some of the original New England settlers migrated westward, immigrants from Canada, Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe moved into the region. Despite a changing population, much of the original spirit of New England remains. This can be seen in the simple wood-frame houses and white church steeples of many small towns and in the traditional lighthouses that dot the Atlantic coast. New England is famous for clam chowder, Maine lobsters, Vermont maple syrup, turkey, Boston baked beans, and Boston cream pie.
