SOUTHWESTERN AMERICA contains more than its fair share of natural wonders—the Grand Canyon, Arches National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park are only three of the most famous natural attractions that draw people from all over the world. The region is home to a wonderful and vibrant mix of Anglo, Latino, Hispanic, and American Indian traditions making it one of the more diverse and interesting corners of America with regards to history, landscape and culture—the Navajo Nation spans the Four Corners of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, just on the edge of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley.

Even though they’re not typically grouped with this region, we’ve also included the states of California and Hawai’i.

California, for its sheer acreage and boasting a population greater than the entire nation of Canada, could nearly qualify as a nation itself. The expanse of land is home to perhaps the greatest diversity of biomes found in the USA—ranging from redwood forests on the North Coast, warm beaches of Southern California to the snow-capped ski resorts in the rugged Sierra Nevada stretch of the Rocky Mountain range, the harsh barren desert of Death Valley to the fertile rolling hills of vineyards in Napa Valley, as well as home to Mount Whitney—the tallest peak in the contiguous United States.

And Hawai’i, which technically marks the northeast corner of Polynesia, was once major hub for whaling, sugar, and pineapple industries—now completely economically dependent on tourism and the US Military. Because the state is an archipelago of over 19 volcanic islands, the landscape is unlike any other state found in the US.
