THE SOUTHEASTERN region of the United States is most commonly referred to as The South, but because that moniker doesn’t usually include Florida—and usually includes the northern border states of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia—we opted for a more geographically-descriptive name for the subregion.
Florida boasts the largest population of all the included states, possessing multiple large metro areas such as Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa Bay, and Jacksonville. Despite the recent anti-LGBTQAI+ legislation and progressively-backwards steps of its state government, Florida ranks #1 of the region and #3 in the entire nation for the size of its LGBTQAI+ population; Georgia—mostly due to the large Atlanta Metro area—trails just behind it at #7 in the nation in a recent study.
Due to the number of theme parks and cruise ports, Florida is also the state with the greatest amount of tourism—but its far from the only state with great tourist attractions. Cities such as Atlanta and Savannah in Georgia; New Orleans and Baton Rouge in Louisiana; Charlotte, Asheville, and the Raleigh-Durham-Cary triangle in North Carolina; Charleston, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina; Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville in Tennessee; Biloxi and Jackson in Mississippi; Birmingham and Mobile in Alabama; and Little Rock and Hot Springs in Arkansas all have amazing modern and historical sites and experiences that attract tourists every year.
