ANTARCTICA

ANTARCTIC PENINSULA, DRAKE PASSAGE. FALKLAND ISLANDS, LEMAIRE CHANNEL, PORT LOCKROY, ROSS SEA ICE SHELF, SOUTH GEORGIA, & SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS

ANTARCTICA is the southernmost and second smallest of the continents (bigger only than Australia), its surface area of only 14 million square kilometers encompassing the entire South Pole. It is covered almost completely by huge glaciers, with the exception of some areas with high slopes in the mountain ranges and the northern end of the Antarctic Peninsula. No place on Earth compares to this vast white wilderness of elemental forces: snow, ice, water, and rock.

It is the coldest, driest continent, with the highest average altitude and highest index of strong winds on the planet. Legally, Antarctica is subject to the Antarctic Treaty, whereby the various nations that claimed territory on the continent (Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Norway, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom) agreed to suspend their claims, opening the continent to scientific research and exploration. For this reason—and due to the harshness of the climatic conditions—it has no permanent population, although it sustains a temporary population of scientists and support staff at the polar bases, which ranges from 1,000 (in winter) to 4,000 people (in summer). Two of these settlement with a regular population (including children) are Villa Las Estrellas (from Chile) and Base Esperanza (from Argentina).
